Battle of the Bands

We are excited to have you involved with Battle of the Bands! In order for us to process your full registration we need you to send us a press-kit. The requirements include:

1) Band Biography:
Your biography needs to be no more than three paragraphs long.

2) Goal/Mission Statement:
Your band needs to write 150 - 200 words on your band’s personal goals/mission. Why have you formed a band?  What do you want to achieve as a band? What are your reasons for performing?

3) Band Photo:
A band photo is to be provided with your biography.  This is the photo the whole world will see if you get selected in the top 25 [five rounds with five bands in each round].

4) Contact Details:
This includes names of all the band members and the contact number, postal address, and email address of one designated contact for the band. If you have a website, Myspace or Facebook page, please provide the URL and web address.

5) Demo CD:
Please provide a demo CD with at least two songs (at least 2:00 minutes in length each)

6) Band Footage:
This isn’t a requirement but remember that the more you get our attention the more likely you are to be in the top 25, and then the finalists who play on the day. Whether it is live performance, interviews or some random footage that showcases the personality of the band, send it in. Send this to us all in one package.

JULY 15th - Round 1

All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of industry professionals and the top 25 bands who show the most potential will move into
Round 2.

Panel includes:
Michael Gore –National DVD and Music buyer for the extremely successful Koorong Australia chain of stores
Andrew Morris – New Technologies manger for the hugely influential Fresh (HEART FM103.2)
Andy Mak – Managing Director of the rapidly successful Delusion Records
JD – Member of the Hillsong United Worship Team
Phil Kennedy – Managing Director of the breakout label El Shaddai Records
Sandra Hudson – Festival Manger for the internationally renowned Big Exo Day

Selection will be made based on the following categories:
a.    Music – Unique sound, melody and lyrics, musical ability
b.    Live performance – Ability to engage a crowd, atmosphere and stage presence
c.    Style and Branding potential
d.    Fan base

Please note: Big Exo Day is all about placing value on young people, and the underlying theme is that Life Can be Excellent and positive. Bands who have negative themes, or who’s character and lifestyle does not promote positive speech and choices will not be considered appropriate for this competition.

JULY 25th - Round 2

The top 25 bands will be randomly allocated into five groups with five bands competing in each round.   
There will be one video featuring all bands created for each round. This video will then be distributed via email, to the entire Youth Alive network, as well as our Facebook and Myspace site. It’s then up to the Big Exo Day fans to choose the band they love the most. We will have an SMS voting system which will enable individuals to choose their favourite band.

If you end up being one of those top bands then you can use your methods to get the word out there to as MANY people as possible so they can vote for you!

SEPT 7th - Round 3

The five bands with the most votes at the end of Round 3, plus two wildcard picks from our judges, will be chosen to play at The Big Exo Day on the Emerging Artists Stage. Another video will be created featuring the top 7 bands and will be sent to the entire Youth Alive Network as well as those on our Myspace and Facebook pages.  
Your set time will be advised at least one week before the event, and will be decided based on total number of votes received.

SEPT 19th - Round 4 – On the Day


You want to get as many people as possible to the Big Exo Day so they can support you in the crowd! The final round, determining the winners, will be judged on two factors:

  1. The crowd’s response to your band
  2. The judges’ input based on the day’s performance

The Ultimate Prize

Important Dates

1)    May 15th - The battle begins 2)    July 15th – The op 25 will be chosen
3)    July 25th – The five rounds occur (one each week)
4)    Sept 7th – The Top 5 bands will be chosen along with the two wildcards
5)    September 19th – Big Exo Day
